Gettysburg Adventure -- June 5-8.

Departure:  We wish to have wheels rolling from St. Monica South parking lot by 6am Thursday -- meaning we'd like to meet there by 5:45 am.  Some vehicles may leave before that with tents for early setup.  Anticipated travel time is 10 hours.  Scouts MAY bring electronics for the drive time -- and portable DVD players are welcome for Scouts to watch Gettysburg DVDs, or listen to a Gettysburg CD we've acquired

Note What to Bring to the left for your packing tips.  Troop Bugler Eric, can you bring your trumpet?  (Union and rebel forces used the bugle and drums to direct their forces.)

Itinerary:

Thursday
    We plan on one stop for refuel, both cars and Scouts. 
    Plan to arrive by 4pm -- proceed to setup camp, and prepare dinner.
    After dinner we will begin our first reconnaissance -- choices are the town of Gettysburg or the Visitor Center.  
    10:00 pm -- All quiet. 

Friday
    7:00 am -- Breakfast
    8:30 am -- two choices, depending on weather and energy.  There are Scouting Heritage Trails available for us.  They involve four separate activities -- Visitor Center, Town Historic Walk, Johnny Reb 9 mile hike and Billy Yank 3 miler.  And each earns a portion of a large Gettysburg Patch.  We do not have time for the "five star" Eisenhower farm tour.
    noon -- backpack type lunch (patrols please bring lunches that you can carry with you on a hike.
    1:00 pm -- continue chosen activity
    5:00 pm -- return to prep dinner
    7:00 pm -- Shower time / evening activity or game
    9:00 pm -- campfire option
    10:00 pm -- All quiet

Saturday
    7:00 am -- Breakfast
    8:30 am -- See choices above
     noon -- backpack type lunch (patrols please bring lunches that you can carry with you on a hike.
    1:00 pm -- continue chosen activity
    5:00 pm -- return to prep for dinner
    6:00 pm -- Dinner at General Pickett's Buffet ($8 for 11 Yr Olds, $11 for 12-17, $12 for adults, tax, tip included)
    8:00 pm -- Shower time / evening activity or game
    9:00 pm -- closing campfire

Sunday
    7:00 am -- Breakfast (a quick, no cook one)
    8:30 am -- Religious Services
    10:00 am -- break camp
    11:00 am -- wheels rolling
    Return trip will include Scouts packing lunch and stopping for refuel and dinner. Drivers to decide where.  Expected return time 9:00pm  -- watch the Troop website for updates through the day.

Meal Planning:

Patrols are to plan on:

  • Three Breakfasts, one a quick breakfast (Fri, Sat, Sun quick)
  • Three "backpack" lunches (lunches that you can take with you and require no cooking for Fri,
  • Sat and in car on Sun)
  • Two nice Dinners (Thurs, Fri)
  • Hiking Snacks (for two days -- plan on maybe four healthy snack -- gorp, granola, seeds/nuts, energy bars)
